[ARCHIVED] Fraud

On December 1, 2014 at 4:29 PM Hampton Twp Police received a call for a fraud complaint from a resident who stated that he received a phone call saying that the I.R.S. was coming to arrest him for failing to pay taxes. The caller advised that he received a message on his home phone at approximately 2 PM today from someone claiming to be an agent from the I.R.S. He called them back at the number they left (831)250-8070 and spoke with an suspected agent. The caller advised that the agent told him that he was going to arrest him for claiming mileage on a vehicle from his 2008 tax return and the caller advised the agent that he has never claimed mileage on his vehicle(s). The caller also stated that the agent offered to meet him at a business on McKnight Rd. to take his payment. The caller was advised that this is a scam and that Hampton Twp Police has taken numerous complaints about it. The caller was advised not to give any personal information out or send any money to them and he was advised against meeting anyone on McKnight Rd. The caller was advised that he could also file a report on line with the F.B.I., the Federal Trade Commission, the IRS and stopfraud.gov. The officer attempted to call the number that was provided and found that the number is not in service.
